About Le Grand, California
W. P. Stoneroad surveyed Le Grand in August 1896 along the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad. The town map was filed on September 5, 1896. Luella J. Dickenson approved the map, but first she renamed seven of its streets. Afterward the streets included Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison.
In 1902, Le Grand was one of two places leading new growth in Merced County. Growth around the town came in citrus and other fruits. The land seemed especially suited to oranges. Le Grand sat above a bed of water-bearing gravel, like several of California's best sections.
