About Planada, California

Planada is a community in Merced County, in California's Central Valley, about 9 miles east of the county seat at Merced. Railroad officials first called the place Whitton. The area's first white settlers were Swiss dairy farmers, and they renamed their settlement Geneva. A Geneva post office opened in 1896, shut down in 1897 and opened again in 1898.

  • A new name in 1911In 1911 the town held a contest to choose a new name. Many names were sent in, and the winner was Planada, the Spanish word for plain. It suited a town that sits on a rich, fertile plain.
  • Geneva station becomes PlanadaWhen the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad came through in the late 1890s, it opened a stop here and named it Geneva. The station later took the name Planada along with the town.
  • 4,164 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 4,164 people in Planada, down from 4,584 in 2010. The town covers 1.7 square miles at an elevation of 226 feet. State Route 140 passes through it, heading west to Merced and northeast 28 miles to Mariposa, up in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
