About Cimarron Hills, Colorado
Cimarron Hills is a community of 19,311 people in El Paso County, Colorado. It has never incorporated as a town, so the county governs it, even though the city of Colorado Springs surrounds it on every side. Work on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad's main line from Limon to Colorado Springs began in 1888, and the route crossed the ground where Cimarron Hills now stands.
- The Rocky Mountain RocketPassengers rode through Cimarron Hills on the Rock Island's Rocky Mountain Rocket from 1939 until 1966. After the passenger trains ended, the Cadillac and Lake City Railway ran trains on the line between Cimarron Hills and Limon.
- A rail line from aboveThe tracks were pulled up in 1993, but the old railroad grade never went away. In aerial photos of Cimarron Hills it still stands out as a large U shape curving through the community.
- Firefighters since 1972The Cimarron Hills Fire Department got its start in 1972 in a local garage. About 30 volunteers staffed it with a pumper truck on loan from the Air Force, and they answered 32 calls that first year. By its 50th year, in 2022, it had become a career department handling more than 2,000 calls a year.
