About Security-Widefield, Colorado
Security-Widefield is a community of 38,639 people in El Paso County, near Colorado Springs in the Fountain Valley. It began on ranch land in 1953, when the investment banker Edwin W. Hayes purchased a ranch there and laid out Security Village, a subdivision of affordable houses for families. He chose the name Security to sell the idea that owning a home there was a safe bet on the future.
Four years later, in 1957, the Arizona land developer Jules Watson bought the neighboring ranch land and started a second subdivision, Widefield Homes. Neither neighborhood ever incorporated, so El Paso County governs the two communities together as Security-Widefield.
- Split by Fontaine BoulevardFontaine Boulevard runs east and west through the area. Locals usually count Security as the part northwest of it and Widefield as the stretches north and southeast of it, next to the City of Fountain. Each neighborhood is tied to its own water tower: the Security Water and Sanitation District serves much of the north side, and the Widefield district serves the south side and a small part of the north.
- Flight 585 in March 1991United Airlines Flight 585 crashed in Widefield in March 1991, and all 25 people on board died. Investigators later traced the crash to a design flaw in the rudder power control unit of the Boeing 737-200.
- Two big high schoolsWidefield School District 3 teaches the area's students. Its Mesa Ridge High School and Widefield High School are the largest high schools in the region.
