About Fort Carson, Colorado
Fort Carson is a U.S. Army post just south of Colorado Springs. Its developed part, in El Paso County, is a community of 17,693 people. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the city of Colorado Springs bought land to its south and gave it to the War Department in 1942. Work began right away, and the first building, the camp headquarters, was finished on January 31, 1942.
At the height of construction, nearly 11,500 workers were on the job. The finished camp could house 35,173 enlisted men along with 1,818 officers and 592 nurses. The first major unit activated there was the 89th Infantry Division, and more than 100,000 soldiers trained at the camp during World War II. In 1954 Camp Carson was renamed Fort Carson. Mechanized units arrived in the 1960s, and the post grew to 137,000 acres.
- Named for Kit CarsonThe camp took the name of General Christopher "Kit" Carson, the famous Army scout whose travels in the 1800s covered much of the American West.
- Nearly 9,000 prisoners of warAn internment camp opened here on the first day of 1943. Most of its prisoners were Italian or German. They eased Colorado's wartime labor shortage by working on farms, canning tomatoes, cutting corn and helping with logging on the Western Slope.
- Hambone the muleThe first pack mules came by train from Nebraska in July 1942, and they stayed until 1956, carrying weapons and supplies over the mountains for pack artillery battalions. The 4th Field Artillery Battalion was proud of Hambone. For 13 years the mule hauled first sergeants over Ute Pass to Camp Hale. When he died in March 1971, he was given a burial with full military honors.
- Piñon Canyon, bought in 1983In September 1983 the Army bought a training area of 235,000 acres, about 150 miles southeast of the post. In 2007 it announced a plan to add 418,000 acres of private ranch land. Many ranchers refused to give up their land, and the Army cancelled the expansion on November 25, 2013.
