About Clayton, North Carolina

Clayton is a town of 26,307 people in western Johnston County, with small pieces reaching into Wake County. Its limits now run northeast to the Neuse River and beyond. It is a suburb of Raleigh, 16 miles to the northwest, and it grew from 16,116 people in 2010 as the Research Triangle and highways such as I-40 and US 70 drew newcomers. Work on the 10.5-mile Highway 70 Clayton Bypass began in 2006 and finished in June 2008.

The English surveyor John Lawson came through the area in 1701. He had set out from Charleston, South Carolina, and was following the Neuse River, bound for the Piedmont and eastern North Carolina. At the time the Tuscarora people lived on most of this land. European settlers and their Native American allies defeated the Tuscarora in 1711 and drove them out of what was then the Province of Carolina.

  • A cotton mill in 1900Ashley Horne founded the Clayton Cotton Mill in town in 1900.

  • An ambassador and a world recordThe historian William Dodd, who lived from 1869 to 1940, was the American ambassador in Germany between 1933 and 1937. Kendra "Keni" Harrison, also from Clayton, set the women's world record in the 100 metres hurdles at the London Grand Prix.
