About Clinton, Washington
Ferry service between Mukilteo and Clinton began in 1911 with a boat for passengers only. By 1919 it carried cars, which made South Whidbey Island much easier to reach. The Black Ball Line ran it first. The state later took it over as part of Washington State Ferries.
Clinton was first home to the Snohomish people, a Coast Salish tribe. Their largest village in southern Whidbey was Digwadsh, whose name meant in the basket. It held about seven cedar longhouses and often hosted Duwamish and Suquamish visitors. Many of its descendants now live on the Tulalip Reservation.
