About Coral Hills, Maryland

Coral Hills is a community of 9,997 people in Prince George's County, where the county meets the District of Columbia. Two of the stones that first marked the boundary of the federal district still stand within it. Both were set in 1792, as the eighteenth and nineteenth markers placed on the Maryland side of the line.

More than a century later, two chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution put fences around the old stones, around 1916. In 1996 both markers were documented for the National Register of Historic Places, and they remain on the land where they were first laid.

  • Southeast No. 1, set in 1792The Southeast No. 1 stone was the eighteenth boundary marker placed in Maryland. Around 1916 the Daughters of the American Revolution's Sarah Franklin Chapter dedicated a fence around it.
  • An iron fence in 1916The Southeast No. 2 stone, also laid in 1792, was the nineteenth marker placed in Maryland. On May 17, 1916, the Daughters of the American Revolution's Marcia Burns Chapter dedicated the iron fence that surrounds it.
  • A school turned community centerJohn Edgar Howard Elementary School served Coral Hills until it was scheduled to close in 2009. The county's Department of Parks and Recreation now runs the old building as the John E. Howard Community Center, with a gymnasium, a game room, a tennis court, a playground and an athletic field.
