About Walker Mill, Maryland

Walker Mill is an unincorporated community of 12,187 people in Prince George's County, counted by the Census Bureau as a census-designated place. A mill called the Walker Mill once stood here on the Southwest Branch. It was a big frame building, three stories tall, that drew its power from a water wheel.

The Walker Mill ranked among the oldest and best known mills of its type in the county. It also kept grinding later than nearly every other mill in Prince George's County and was one of the last there to shut down.

  • A swampy spot by 1974In 1974 Michael F. Dwyer, a park historian for M-NCPPC, recorded the mill site for the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. By then the building was gone entirely. All he found was a swampy patch beside the Southwest Branch, at the place where Old Walker Mill Road had been closed off a few years before.
  • 12,187 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 12,187 people in Walker Mill, which covers 3.2 square miles of land. Walker Mill Middle School carries the community's name and teaches students from most of it.
