About Country Knolls, New York

Country Knolls is a community of 5,349 people in Saratoga County, and it began as a housing development. Robert Van Patten's Clifton Park building company laid out Country Knolls Estates, and its first homes, built in 1964, lined Manor Court, Ridge Lane, Meridian Lane and Hillcrest Drive.

The development kept growing until it spread across the line into the town of Malta. In 1988 builders reached a stretch of untouched land in the heart of the neighborhood and opened the new Huntington Parkway there. Homes in the Longkill and Ashley sections, set apart by Longkill Road and Ushers Road, belong to Country Knolls as well.

  • The original Country KnollsVan Patten's company built Clifton Knolls first, then this development, and later Country Knolls West and Country Knolls South, a few miles away. Because of that, neighbors sometimes call this one Country Knolls North, or simply the original. The census community covers only part of the larger Country Knolls Estates.
  • Nearly 5,000 homesBy the time he died, Robert Van Patten had built nearly 5,000 homes in Clifton Park. His Clifton Knolls subdivision turned Clifton Park into one of the leading suburbs of the Capital District, and he is buried in Jonesville Cemetery.
  • Jonesville's cemeteryThe hamlet of Jonesville is named for James Jones, who founded it. Jonesville Cemetery, in northern Clifton Park, was designed around 1864 by Burton A. Thomas, a landscape architect and surveyor whose work included 25 cemeteries. Early on, 252 burials and their monuments were moved into it from the hamlet's small Union Grove Cemetery. Its oldest marked stone, dated 1799, belongs to Jemima Hubbs, and Jones himself lies buried there.
