About Cuevitas, Texas
Cuevitas is a small community in Hidalgo County, part of the metropolitan area around McAllen, Edinburg and Mission. An older settlement called Las Cuevas stood here and lasted into the 1940s. By 1976 that village was gone, and a colonia had grown up in its place.
- 242 people in 1976When the colonia took the place of Las Cuevas, it held 242 residents living in forty-eight dwellings. The community has grown much smaller since then, and the 2020 census counted 33 people in Cuevitas.
- A name on GunsmokeCuevitas comes up by name in "Greater Love," an episode of the television western Gunsmoke.
- La Joya schoolsChildren in Cuevitas attend the La Joya Independent School District. The youngest start at Sam Fordyce Elementary School, then move on to Lorenzo de Zavala Middle School and finally to La Joya High School. South Texas Independent School District also runs magnet schools that serve the community.
