About Dakota Dunes, South Dakota
Dakota Dunes is a planned community of 4,020 people in Union County, in the far southeast corner of South Dakota, on the land between the Big Sioux and Missouri rivers. Berkshire Hathaway Energy of Des Moines, which still owns and develops it, unveiled plans in 1988 for about 2,000 acres of homes and businesses set among the sand dunes, with a golf course at the center.
To build it, the developers had to see a state boundary change through, get a new interchange on the interstate and buy the Sioux City Boat Club, which carries on nearby as Two Rivers Golf Club. The work paid off on August 14, 1991, when the Dakota Dunes Country Club opened and an estimated 3,000 spectators turned out to see Arnold Palmer play all 18 holes on a course his design company had laid out.
- The flood of 2011In the summer of 2011 the Missouri River rose so high that everyone in Dakota Dunes had to leave, and the country club itself took on the river. A levee was raised to protect the people who live here. In 2019 the Big Sioux and Missouri flooded again and threatened the town.
- Glenn Ivarsen DayGlenn Ivarsen grew up around Beresford and joined Iowa Public Service in Sioux City in 1966. He helped develop and market Dakota Dunes, and for over ten years he sat on its Community Improvement District board of supervisors. As he prepared to retire on March 1, 2003, Governor M. Michael Rounds honored him by proclaiming February 26, 2003, Glenn Ivarsen Day across South Dakota.
- Two TV stations' studiosLocal television stations KPTH and KMEG built their studios in Dakota Dunes between 1999 and 2000, and they still broadcast from here.
- Five neighborhoodsThe development has five main neighborhoods. Country Club Estates is one, along with the Willows, the Prairie and the Meadows, and the fifth is its apartment community.
