About Priceville, Alabama

Priceville is a city of 3,512 people in Morgan County, just south of the Tennessee River. It is named for the Price family. They sold their plantation in Lawrence County and settled here in 1825, and they stayed leaders in the community for many years. For decades Priceville was not a town at all. It sat in rural Morgan County, about ten miles southeast of Decatur, and people saw it as part of that city.

Priceville stayed small until Interstate 65 was built through the area in the late 1950s. Its place beside the new highway drew many new families. In 1975 the community applied to become a town of its own. It had 2,658 people in 2010, and today it is the third-largest town in Morgan County.

  • Home of the racking horseThe Racking Horse Breeders Association of America has its headquarters in Priceville. Each year riders bring their horses to the town's Celebration Arena for the World Racking Horse Championships.
  • The Price-Wooten HouseThe Price-Wooten House was built around 1856. It now holds a place on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
  • A veterans memorial in 2012In 2012 Priceville dedicated the Morgan County Veterans Memorial. The town's Veterans Park has a gazebo, a pavilion and a community center. Each year the town holds a Veterans Memorial Team Bass Tournament, an Easter Egg Hunt, a car show and a Christmas parade.
  • Next to Wheeler RefugeThe Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge lies between Priceville and Decatur. It is the biggest wildlife refuge in Alabama. The Tennessee River, known here as Wheeler Lake, runs just north of town.
