About Del Rey, California
The town was first called Clifton, after its founder, Clift Wilkinson. A post office opened in 1885. In 1898 the railroad renamed the town for the Rancho del Rey, the ranch where its station stood. In Spanish, del rey means of the king.
In October 1900, fire destroyed the big Castle Bros. packing house at Del Rey station. Inside were some thirty carloads of raisins and twenty tons of dried Muir peaches. The building measured 200 by 100 feet and had first stood at the Midwinter Fair grounds. Because the association controlled the raisins, growers were expected to bear most of the loss.
