About Dothan, Alabama

Dothan is a city of 71,072 people and the seat of Houston County, in the Wiregrass region of southeastern Alabama. A freshwater spring where two Native American trade paths crossed made this spot a Yamassee and Creek trading post. In the 1830s lumbermen from Georgia came for the yellow pine, set up a lasting camp by the spring and named it Poplar Head for the trees nearby. Growth was slow, and only nine families lived there in 1860.

Work in lumber, turpentine and naval stores drew more settlers in the late 1870s, and they cleared farms around the old camp. When residents asked the federal government for a post office, they learned that another Alabama town already had the name Poplar Head. A local minister proposed Dothan, after a village named in the Bible, and the town was incorporated under that name on November 10, 1885.

“In its early days, Dothan was a rough place that took a toll on its more civic-minded citizens.”
Encyclopedia of Alabama
  • The Dothan Riot of 1889Farmers and lumbermen who rode into town on weekends paid little mind to its laws, and several mayors and lawmen quit in frustration. In 1889 the town put a tax on cotton wagons passing through. The Farmers' Alliance fought it, and when its leader refused to pay, he was arrested. A gunfight followed in which the marshal killed him and two other farmers. Afterward the anger faded, and farmers and town officials began working together.
  • The railroad arrivesThe Alabama Midland Railroad laid track through Dothan in 1889, linking it with Montgomery and with Bainbridge, Georgia. The line made Dothan the trading center of Henry County, and the town soon grew past both Columbia, its rival on the river, and Abbeville, the county seat.
  • Alabama's 67th and last countyBankers in Dothan, along with the Dothan Light's editor, pushed for a new county with the town as its seat. Delegates to the 1901 state constitutional convention changed the rules on county size to allow it, and in February 1903 the legislature created Houston County, named for former governor George S. Houston, with Dothan as its seat.
  • Peanut Capital of the WorldWhen the boll weevil wiped out the cotton crops in the 1910s, area farmers switched to peanuts, and the crop made Dothan prosper. About one-quarter of the U.S. peanut harvest now grows within 75 miles of the city, much of it processed here, and Dothan holds the National Peanut Festival every year.
  • Porter Hardware, since 1889Porter Hardware opened its doors in Dothan in 1889 and was the oldest hardware store in Alabama when it closed in 2014. Four years later, in 2018, the old store reopened as a museum.
