About Dover, Florida

Dover is a community in Hillsborough County, about 24 miles from downtown Tampa. Plant City lies 6 miles to its east, and Brandon sits 7 miles to the southwest. Settlers arrived in 1890, and the place went through two names before it settled on this one. It was first called Sydney and then Cork, making it the second Hillsborough community to carry that name. The Florida place-name historian Allen Morris wrote that the name Dover most likely came with settlers who had moved here from Dover, Delaware's capital city.

  • An orange-growing villageBy 1918 the Florida State Gazetteer described Dover as a village of about 100 people on the A. C. L. railway. The town had Baptist, Adventist and Methodist churches, and nearly everyone named in its directory entry made a living growing oranges.
  • First high school, class of 2011Dover had no high school of its own until Strawberry Crest High School, home of the Chargers, sent off its first graduating class in 2011. The school also became an IB school, only the fourth in Hillsborough County to earn that status.
  • 3,266 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 3,266 people in Dover, down from 3,702 in 2010. The community covers 2.6 square miles, almost all of it land.
