About Durham, California

Durham is a community of 5,834 people in Butte County, built where the Maidu settlement of Eskini once stood. The Durham family founded the town, and it takes its name from W. W. Durham, who served in the California State Assembly. In 1870 the California and Oregon Railroad opened a Durham station, which tied the farms here to distant markets.

Later the Northern Electric Railway, which became the Sacramento Northern, ran an electrified line through town. For many years the two railroads carried both passengers and freight to and from Durham. The Sacramento Northern tracks were gone by the 1980s, and trains on the old California and Oregon route, now Union Pacific, no longer stop here.

  • The Durham brothers of 1861W. W. Durham and his brother George came to California in 1861 to work the farm of their uncle, Robert Durham. Robert had inherited that farm from the California pioneer Samuel Neal. W. W. Durham's house still stands as a reminder of the town's early years, and it joined the National Register in 1992.
  • A state colony in 1917In 1917 the state legislature passed an act that chose Durham for California's first State Land Settlement Colony, and the town grew a great deal as new settlers arrived. The Durham Flour Mill was at the center of community life, even though it burned down several times.
  • Almonds since 1875Durham's economy began with cattle and sheep ranching. The first almond trees here were planted as an experiment in 1875, and growers began raising them commercially in 1895. Almonds now lead the local economy, with walnuts and rice as the other major crops.
  • The 2011 orchard tornadoOn June 1, 2011, an EF1 tornado touched down south of Durham. It tore thousands of almond trees out of the ground, destroyed an outbuilding and damaged a barn.
