About East Harwich, Massachusetts

East Harwich is a village of 5,250 people in Barnstable County, part of the larger town of Harwich on Cape Cod. Brewster lies to its north and Chatham to its southeast, while Harwich Port and Harwich Center sit to its south and southwest.

Local Methodists formed a society in 1797, and in 1799 they put up their first meeting house, a tiny building whose walls were never plastered or painted. They worshiped there until 1811, when they built a new church in East Harwich. That church was still their home when the county history was written in 1890.

  • Probate court at a tavernLong before 1890, David Kendrick kept a public house in East Harwich. While Nymphas Marston served as probate judge, the county's probate courts held their sessions there.
  • A post office in 1830The village got its own post office in 1830, with Rufus L. Thacher as its first postmaster. In 1851 Mulford Young opened a small store here, and he kept adding to the business until it became a general country store.
  • Fishing on Pleasant BayBy 1890, many men from East Harwich made their living fishing from boats that went out of Pleasant Bay.
