About East Haven, Connecticut

East Haven is a town of 27,923 people in New Haven County, on Long Island Sound across the harbor from New Haven. On November 24, 1638, Momauguin, sachem of the Quinnipiac, consented when the English bought Quinnipiack, and in 1644 Thomas Gregson settled the first family here on 133 acres at Solitary Cove, now Morris Cove. The farmers east of the Quinnipiac River chose their own selectmen and constable on August 4, 1684, with New Haven's consent, but East Haven did not become a separate town until 1785.

The Revolution reached the village in July 1779, when British troops marched through. Their advance got as far as the stone meetinghouse and searched it for the church silver, and the town's losses came to at least $25,000. The Marquis de Lafayette and his troops also camped on the green, where a monument now honors them.

“Geese once saved Rome, but they ruined East Haven”
The Republic of New Haven, 1886
  • The governor and the geeseA 1707 colony charter led villagers to swap the name Iron Works Village for East Haven, sure they now had a township. Governor Gurdon Saltonstall, living here on his wife's land, killed many village geese straying from Furnace Pond onto his farm. East Haven denied him every vote at the next election, and the Assembly soon made it a New Haven parish again. A town charter came in 1785, with the first town meeting that July in the meetinghouse.
  • Connecticut's first iron worksIn 1655 Stephen Goodyear opened Connecticut's first iron works beside the Great Pond, today Lake Saltonstall. On bog ore from North Haven, the forge worked roughly twenty-five years, and a fulling mill replaced it in 1709. East Haven gathered Kentucky mules headed to the West Indies, and a blacksmith whose shop looked onto the green from the north pulled their shoes before sailing.
  • The Old Stone ChurchFair Haven stonemason George Lancraft raised the red sandstone meetinghouse from 1772 to 1774 for Rev. Nicholas Street, pastor for fifty-one years. Stone beat wood on cost since members already had stone, lime, teams and men on hand. Edmond Bradley and others gave a steeple clock, and by 1798 it was finished. After an 1850 remodeling, Lancraft's great-grandson William M. Lancraft added the Centennial Chapel in 1874.
  • A high school of its ownEast Haven students went to New Haven High School until 1936, when the town built its first public high school on Tyler Street. New Haven architect Roy W. Foote designed it, and the federal Public Works Administration helped build it. It served students until today's high school replaced it in 1997. In 2020 the old building became apartments for people 55 and over, and East Haven High School was added to the National Register that same year.
  • Saving the trolleys in 1945In 1945 the Branford Electric Railway Association was founded to save the trolleys, and in 1947 it took over the line from East Haven to Short Beach. It carries on as the Shore Line Trolley Museum on River Street, the country's oldest trolley museum in continuous operation, running restored cars on 1.5 miles of track.
