About Branford Center, Connecticut
Branford Center is the old heart of the town of Branford, Connecticut, home to 6,026 people in 2020. It sits between Route 1, the Amtrak tracks and the Branford River. Long before English settlers came, the land was called Totoket, the Land of the Tidal River. The New Haven Colony recruited 40 families to settle here, and they most likely came in the spring of 1644.
The village grew on two things: good farms and the Branford River estuary, which became a major port for ships in the coasting trade. That prosperity let Branford Center rival New Haven in business for much of the 1700s. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Atlantic Wire Company and the Malleable Iron Fittings Company put up their buildings in the center.
- Books that started YaleIn 1701 several ministers met at Samuel Russell's parsonage here, each giving books toward starting a college for the colony. That school grew into Yale University. The parsonage is gone, but a marker on the Branford Green shows where it once stood.
- A marble library from 1893The James Blackstone Memorial Library dates from 1893 and was designed by the Chicago architect Solon Spencer Beman. Built with Tennessee marble, it has a domed, eight-sided rotunda at its center. Each year the Friends of the Blackstone Memorial Library hold a used book sale.
- Churches around the GreenThe Branford Green is lined with churches and the town hall. The First Baptist Church at 975 Main Street dates from 1840, and the brick and stone First Congregational Church, a Greek Revival building at 1009 Main Street, from 1843. The Greek Revival town hall followed in 1857, with a memorial to Branford's part in the Civil War beside it. The Green also hosts the yearly Branford Festival.
