About East Mountain, Texas
East Mountain is a city centered in southeastern Upshur County, with small extensions into Gregg County. Established in the 1870s near the wooded rise that gave the community its name, it developed around a school, church, cotton gins, a sawmill, and later oil.
- 2020 PopulationThe United States Census Bureau recorded 899 residents in 2020, up from 797 in 2010.
- Early CommunityA local school opened in the mid-1870s, when residents also organized a Primitive Baptist church.
- Gins and SawmillIn the late 1870s, Sam Salter established a horse-driven cotton gin, followed by Thomas Wells's steam gin and sawmill.
- Savannah Post OfficeA post office named Savannah operated from 1902 to 1905, and the community became East Mountain soon afterward.
- Oil BoomOil discoveries in the 1930s brought rapid wealth, and producing wells stood at the school and every town church during the boom's height.
