About East Williston, New York
East Williston is a Nassau County village of 2,645 people, part of the Town of North Hempstead on Long Island. Its land was first known as The North Side because it lay north of the Hempstead Plains, where the town grazed its animals, and a deed dated January 19, 1663, is the earliest record of that name. So many Willis families farmed here by the middle of the 1800s that people began calling the area Williston.
When residents asked for a post office of their own in 1879, a town in upstate New York already had a post office under the name Williston, so they added East to theirs. The new name covered both this village and its western neighbor, now Williston Park. In 1926 the two halves incorporated as separate villages, because each had grown a very different character.
- The railroad arrives in 1865The Long Island Rail Road laid its line through the farmland in 1865 and opened a station here. New trades grew up around the depot, with local shops turning out bricks, windmills and carriages.
- The East Williston RunaboutHenry M. Willis designed and built a light carriage with two wheels and two seats. Its soft springs gave a comfortable ride over the rough roads of the day, and its body could be locked to the axle so the cart could race on a track. Oakley and Griffin bought the business from Willis in 1889 and went on to build more than 1,000 of the Runabout Roadcarts.
- Homes on Will Rogers' estateIn the 1930s, Newell & Daniel, a major Long Island real estate firm, planned and built the Wheatley Ridge neighborhood on land that had been an estate owned by the humorist and entertainer Will Rogers.
- Its own school district in 1949In 1949 a new East Williston Union Free School District replaced the older East Williston Common School District. Every child in the village who goes to public school attends its schools, and the district's North Side School stands inside the village.
