About Carle Place, New York: Home, Street by Street

In 1946 builder William J. Levitt bought 19 acres by the Carle Place train station as a test. His crews hauled in pre-cut lumber and quickly put up 600 low-cost houses. Returning veterans moved in, and the population grew 500 percent in five years. The project became the model for Levittown.

The hamlet took its name from a 32-room house that Silas Carle built in the 1800s. People called the home the Carle Place, and the surrounding area later took the name. A 1951 plan to rename the hamlet failed because most residents wanted to keep it.
