About Garden City, New York

In 1869 Alexander Turney Stewart, a millionaire born in Ireland, bought part of the thinly settled Hempstead Plains. He planned Garden City around a grand hotel. To bring people in, he also built the Central Railroad of Long Island, which opened in 1873.

A new Garden City Hotel opened in 1895, designed by the noted firm McKim, Mead and White. Fire destroyed it in 1899. The village rebuilt the hotel larger, and a hotel still stands on the original grounds today.

  • Wartime camps on village landThe flat land here served the Army in three wars. Camp Black was set up for the Spanish-American War of 1898. In 1917 Camp Albert Mills filled the southeast part of the village for World War I, and it closed after the war.
