About the Village of Hempstead, New York
In the spring of 1644, thirty to forty Puritan families left Stamford, Connecticut, and sailed across Long Island Sound. They landed at Hempstead Harbor and walked inland to settle here, inside Dutch New Netherland. It became the oldest English settlement in today's Nassau County.
Between 1703 and 1705, Queen Anne of England sent a silver communion service to the new St. George's Church in Hempstead. Much later, on May 6, 1853, Hempstead became the first community in Queens County to incorporate as a village.
