About Westbury, New York
Westbury is a Nassau County village on Long Island, about 18 miles east of Manhattan. Settlers arrived on the Hempstead Plains in 1658, and Henry Willis named the community after his English hometown in 1675. Its history includes Quaker settlement, an African American farming community, railroad development, and substantial twentieth-century growth.
- Early Quaker RootsMany early settlers were Quakers, and the first local Society of Friends meeting house was built in 1700.
- Freedom and CommunityIn 1775, Westbury's Quakers freed all 154 African Americans they enslaved, and many of those freed established nearby farms and dairies.
- Railroad ArrivalThe Long Island Rail Road reached Westbury by 1837, and surviving schedules from that year mention a Westbury stop.
- Village IncorporationResidents approved Westbury's incorporation on March 28, 1932, by a vote of 200 to 24.
- Modern PopulationWestbury recorded 15,404 residents in the 2020 census.
