About East York, Pennsylvania

East York is a community of 9,555 people in Springettsbury Township, York County, just east of the city of York. For many years this ground was Vincent K. Keesey's large farm along the Wrightsville pike. Later the East York Improvement Company purchased that farm and cut it into building lots, and the suburb opened in 1903. Its planner, John H. Longstreet, expected York's growing industries to draw many new residents, and he saw that the city would spread this way.

Promoters said the Keesey Tract lined both sides of Market Street for two-thirds of a mile on the Lincoln Highway, and that a trip to Center Square in York took just eleven minutes. Buyers got high, well-drained ground, cement sidewalks and curbs, macadam streets, filtered water, electric lights and sewers, and York Railways streetcars ran through the middle of the tract. Homes went up quickly, and by the county's 1907 history many of the lots were already built on.

  • Hiestand School, 1912Built in 1912 on donated land, the John S. Hiestand School served the Independent School District. Its teachers took children from first through eighth grade and prepared them for York High School, with the district paying their tuition. The building had two classrooms, basement playrooms for bad weather and a free public library, all surrounded by wide playgrounds.
  • Six rooms by 1937The Hiestand School grew to four rooms in 1927 and to six by 1937. Rising costs and falling enrollment closed it in June 1978, and community groups have used the building ever since.
  • A club for every residentEarly East York offered its people the benefits of a modern club. Any resident could join and bring along their family, with dining, games, lawn tennis and a full social life close to home.
  • Named for Penn's grandsonEast York lies in Springettsbury Township, which takes its name from Springettsbury Manor. The manor was laid out in 1722 for the heirs of William Penn and named for Springett Penn, the grandson Penn favored most.
