About Pleasureville, Pennsylvania

Pleasureville is a community of 2,635 people in York County, set in the northwestern corner of Springettsbury Township about 3 miles north of the county seat, York. Codorus Creek, which flows northeast toward the Susquehanna River, forms its northwestern edge, and Manchester Township lies on the far bank. The Census Bureau first counted it as a census-designated place before the 2020 census.

  • First called PossumtownHalf a century before 1886, when only a few houses stood here in a dense forest, John Myers lived in the settlement and made his living hunting raccoons and opossums. He hung scores of opossum skins across the front of his house, and people throughout York County came to call the place Possumtown. That name was still in use only a few years before 1886.
  • Nearly 300 people in 1886By the time the 1886 History of York County was written, the village around the old hunting grounds had nearly 300 people. Its residents had built a two-story brick schoolhouse and a frame United Brethren church, and they kept three stores, a blacksmith shop and four cigar factories.
