About Emigsville, Pennsylvania

Emigsville is a community of 3,563 people in Manchester Township, York County, just north of the city of York. It carries the name of John Emig, who kept a store in the village for many years and was also a leading farmer. The York and Cumberland Railroad, later known as the Northern Central Railway, was completed in 1850. Soon after it opened, the village grew into a trading center and railroad stop for the fertile farms around it, and by 1886 a county history described it as a prosperous village of 125 people.

  • A vote for public schoolsIn the spring of 1849, Manchester Township held its election at Ludwig Kohr's Hotel near Emigsville and voted to adopt the public school system. The voters chose six school directors to run the new schools, and John Emig, the merchant the village was later named for, was one of them.
  • A band since 1872The Emigsville Band started out in 1872 as the Acme Cornet Band, formed to play for the Acme Wagon Works Company. It still performs today and owns its own Band Hall at 3175 North George Street. Few community concert bands like it remain in York County.
