About Eaton, Ohio

Eaton is a city of 8,375 people and the county seat of Preble County, about 24 miles west of Dayton. William Bruce, a Revolutionary War veteran, bought nearly two thousand acres here and laid out the town in 1806. He named it for General William Eaton, who had commanded American forces in the First Barbary War.

The new town sat where two turnpikes met, so it grew quickly and reached 1,000 people in 1846. Three years later cholera struck, and about half the residents fled; of the 600 who stayed, 120 died. In June 1859 arsonists started a fire that destroyed thirteen of the main businesses, a loss of $40,000 to $50,000, and the flames left the courthouse scorched brown.

  • Bruce's mills and cheap lotsWilliam Bruce, born in 1762, started Eaton's first sawmill and gristmill, and he often handed out corn meal to families in need. To bring in settlers he gave away land and sold lots at low prices or let buyers pay a part at a time. Mound Hill Cemetery became his resting place after his death in 1830.
  • Streets named for war heroesBruce carried his tribute to the Barbary Wars beyond the town's name. Barron, Decatur, Israel, Wadsworth and Somers streets all honor men who fought in the First and Second Barbary Wars.
  • Pork Festival every SeptemberEaton hosts the Preble County Pork Festival on the third full weekend of each September, and the Preble County Fair comes to town every summer.
