About Edison, Washington
Ben Samson became the first settler on Samish Bay here in 1869. The settlement grew, and on March 26, 1876, forty-six settlers asked for a post office. Edward McTaggart was to be postmaster. He suggested the name to honor the great inventor, Thomas A. Edison.
In 1897, Edison became headquarters of Equality Colony, a national socialist experiment. Members farmed and milled timber on 280 acres just outside town. They ran a school and shops for blacksmith and copper work. Their newspaper, Industrial Freedom, reached about 3,000 supporters. The colony folded soon after 1903, when only about 100 members were left.
