About Evans, New York

Evans is a town of 15,308 people in Erie County, about 20 miles southwest of Buffalo, with Lake Erie along its western side. Its first settler came around 1804, but nobody stayed for good until 1808. In 1821 the state carved Evans out of part of the town of Eden, and it grew into a rural lakeshore town with Angola as its village in the south.

  • Named for David E. EvansThe town takes its name from David E. Evans, a nephew of the land agent Joseph Ellicott. Evans became the Holland Land Company's local agent in 1827, and he was remembered for handling the company's affairs kindly when it came to the poor settlers who had bought its land.
  • Fossils on Eighteen Mile CreekEighteen Mile Creek marks the town's northern line, where Evans meets Hamburg. The creek is widely known for the fine fossil formations along its course.
  • Twelve miles of Lake Erie shoreLake Erie forms the town's whole western edge, and its 12 miles of waterfront draw crowds in summer. Bennett Beach, Wendt Beach Park and Sturgeon Point Marina are favorite spots, and a small piece of Evangola State Park reaches into Evans at its southern line.
