About Ewing, New Jersey
Ewing is a township of 37,264 people in Mercer County, with the Delaware River along its western edge. Lenni Lenape people hunted, fished, made pottery and farmed beside the river before Europeans came, and settlers mostly from the British Isles began arriving in 1699. The land moved from Hopewell Township in Burlington County to Hunterdon County in 1714, and by 1719 it belonged to the new Trenton Township.
On February 22, 1834, the state legislature split Ewing off from Trenton Township and named it for the late Charles Ewing, who had served as the New Jersey Supreme Court's chief justice. It joined the new Mercer County on February 22, 1838. Ewing was mostly farms then, with hamlets called Carleton, Cross Keys, Birmingham and Greensburg, known today as Ewing, Ewingville, West Trenton and Wilburtha. In the 20th century the township filled in as a suburb of Trenton.
- The first industrial robotIn 1961 a machine named Unimate went to work at the General Motors Inland Fisher Guide Plant in Ewing. George Devol invented it, and he and Joseph Engelberger founded Unimation to build robots. Its arm handled die castings and welded parts onto car bodies, repeating motions stored on a drum memory. The plant ran from 1938 to 1998, then was torn down. North Olden Avenue Extension, now Ewing's main shopping street, first linked north Trenton homes with it.
- Kahn's Bath House, 1955Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng designed a bath house for the former Jewish Community Center of the Delaware Valley along Lower Ferry Road. Opening in 1955, it served as the entrance and changing rooms for an outdoor pool. Four square rooms surround an open center, each under a wooden pyramid roof on hollow corner columns. Kahn called it a turning point in his thinking about served and serving spaces. With the day camp, it joined the National Register in 1984.
- William Green's 1717 farmhouseWilliam Green was one of the first European settlers here, and the farmhouse he had built in 1717 is still standing today at The College of New Jersey. The same campus holds Lake Sylva, the largest body of water entirely inside the township, made in the 1920s when an earthen dam was thrown across the Shabakunk Creek.
- Jet engines on Parkway AvenueFrom 1953 until 1997 the Navy tested jet engines at Naval Air Warfare Center Trenton, a 528-acre base on Parkway Avenue. The 1993 Base Closure and Realignment Commission recommended shutting it, and nearly 700 civilian jobs went away, most of them moved to Maryland and Tennessee. In October 2013 a charity working to end homelessness took over the base at no cost.
