About Lawrenceville, New Jersey
Lawrenceville is a village of 3,751 people in Lawrence Township, Mercer County, about halfway between Princeton and Trenton. Quakers founded it as Maidenhead in 1697, naming it for an English town on the Thames, and a court at Burlington made the name official on February 20, 1697. Its main road, the King's Highway, was New Jersey's first colonial road, and it also became the first mail route to cross New Jersey.
The village belonged to Burlington County until 1714, when it became part of Hunterdon County, and the Township of Maidenhead was incorporated in 1798. Over time the old name had also come to mean virginity, so the Rev. Isaac V. Brown, the Presbyterian pastor, led a petition to change it. Meeting at John Moore's Tavern on January 24, 1816, the Legislature renamed the township Lawrence, honoring Captain James Lawrence, who became a Navy hero in the War of 1812, and the village became Lawrenceville. In 1838 the township joined the new Mercer County.
“to be relieved of the necessity of using a term which may offend the delicacy of modesty, or disturb the feelings of seriousness, or excite the sneers of the willing.”
- Cornwallis spent one nightCornwallis stopped in Maidenhead on December 8, 1776, on his way to Trenton, and wrote in his diary that one night there was more than enough. Part of that diary later turned up in John Moore's Tavern, now a home at 2695 Main Street. After the battles at Trenton and Assunpink Creek, Washington's troops marched through the village chasing the British, and the armies met at Princeton on January 3, 1777.
- A school founded in 1810Rev. Brown also started the Academy of Maidenhead in 1810. It grew into the Lawrenceville School, now a private high school for boarding and day students, and for a long time it drove the village's economy. The oldest buildings on its campus, around the area called the Circle, are a National Historic Landmark.
- The Jigger ShopFor generations, Lawrenceville School students bought supplies and sodas at the Jigger Shop in the village. Faulty electrical cords to a store refrigerator started a fire that destroyed it on August 10, 1990. A new Jigger Shop opened on the school campus in the Noyes History Building, moved to the Irwin Dining Center in 2011, and after that hall was torn down in early 2023 it became the Big Red Store in the new Tsai Field House.
- Main Street since 1972The houses and shops along more than two miles of Main Street form the Main Street Historic District, listed on the New Jersey and National Registers in 1972 as one of the first historic districts in the state. Among them is the old Maidenhead Church, now the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville at 2688 Main Street, built in 1764 and enlarged in 1833 and again in 1853.
