About Pennington, New Jersey

Pennington is a borough of 2,802 people in Mercer County, and that 2020 count was the highest in its history. For most of its past the village belonged to Hopewell Township. On January 21, 1890, voters approved a referendum to separate, and on January 31 the New Jersey Legislature passed the act that made Pennington a borough.

Hopewell Township still wraps around Pennington on every side, so the two form one of New Jersey's 21 pairs of "doughnut towns." Pennington is also a dry borough, where no alcohol can be sold.

“the first name of the village was Queenstown, which was given it in honor of Queen Anne. Later it was by some, in derision of its comparative insignificance, Pennytown, and as early as 1747 it began to be called Pennington.”
Wikipedia
  • A familiar family nameThe Penington name was already known in the region when the village took it. Edward Penington, who lived from 1667 to 1701, was a son of Quaker leader Isaac Penington. His kinsman William Penn appointed him Surveyor General of Pennsylvania, and he married in West Jersey. The place-name scholar Henry Gannett traced the name instead to members of the Pennington family who served as colonial governors.
  • A school since 1838The Pennington School opened in 1838 with one teacher and three students. It grew from that start into a school for students in grades six through twelve.
  • Pennington Day since 1980Every year, usually in mid-May, local groups and shops line Main Street with booths for Pennington Day, a tradition that goes back to 1980. A morning parade and local music open the day, and the street fair carries on into the afternoon.
