About Millburn, New Jersey

Millburn is a township of 21,710 people in southwestern Essex County, with the Rahway River's West Branch flowing past its downtown. Before the township existed, the place went by Milltown, Millville, Rum Brook and Vauxhall. The name it kept comes from burn, the Scottish word for a stream, because the river turned the wheels of its mills.

After the Revolution, mill owners dammed the Rahway in five places to make mill ponds. Samuel Campbell opened the first paper mill in 1790 and printed banknotes, and most of the early factories that followed also made paper. The Morris and Essex Railroad was finished in 1835, linking Millburn with the big cities to the east and the coal country to the northwest. On March 20, 1857, the New Jersey Legislature made Millburn a township of its own, using land from Springfield Township, as Union County was formed.

  • From paper mill to playhouseThe Diamond Mill was one of Millburn's early paper mills. Its site on the bank of the Rahway is now the Paper Mill Playhouse, a regional theater with 1,200 seats that opened in 1938. It has been named the State Theatre of New Jersey.
  • Hartshorn's Short HillsStewart Hartshorn bought 1,550 acres to build Short Hills, while the Wyoming Land and Improvement Company bought the 100 acres that became Wyoming. Short Hills, with 14,422 people in 2020, now holds most of the township. In 1958 the 16-acre property of his daughter Cora, with 3 miles of trails, was given to the township as the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary.
  • A grave from the RevolutionWith Washington's army camped at Morristown and the British pushing through the Hobart Gap, the war reached Millburn. Washington is said to have watched his soldiers from a lookout now called Washington Rock, in South Mountain Reservation. In 1780 the Battle of Springfield marked the final British push into New Jersey. Nicholas Parsil, killed fighting the British, is buried on White Oak Ridge Road, in a graveyard that belongs to his family.
  • 150 years in 2007In June 2007 Millburn marked the 150th birthday of the township with a party downtown, one of the biggest celebrations the town has ever held.
