About Short Hills, New Jersey

Short Hills is an unincorporated community of 14,422 people inside Millburn Township, in Essex County. It began as a planned village. Stewart Hartshorn had grown rich by perfecting and manufacturing the self-acting shade roller, and he bought 13 acres in Millburn near today's Hobart Avenue, Parsonage Hill Road and Chatham Road. Over time he gathered 1,552 acres for the village and kept 56 for himself, and he limited every lot he didn't own to half an acre.

Hartshorn picked the name because it fit the rolling land and because the Lenape had used the same name for the area. He turned down a resident's idea of calling it Hartshornville, though he was quietly pleased that Short Hills carried his initials. He wanted an easy commute to Hoboken and New York, so in 1879 he paid for a station on the Morris and Essex line himself. In 1880 he talked the Post Office into opening a branch inside that station, and the post office has stayed ever since, with its own ZIP Code, 07078.

  • Green strips along the tracksHartshorn kept the land beside the railroad west of Old Short Hills Road free of building, so strips of open ground divide Hobart Avenue on the north and Chatham Road on the south from the line. The station is the only building that has ever stood right beside the tracks. In 1944 the Hartshorn family gave Crescent Park, across from the station, to Millburn on the condition that it always stay open to the public.
  • A music hall after 17 housesOnce the first 17 houses were built, Hartshorn turned to places the whole village would share, among them a music hall that later became the Short Hills Racquets Club. He died in 1937 at 97. His daughter Cora wrote her own history of the village and helped found the arboretum that carries her name.
  • Temple B'nai Jeshurun in 1968New Jersey's oldest Reform Jewish congregation, with 1,100 member families, moved from Newark to a 21-acre site in Short Hills in 1968. Most of the land was bought from Congressman Robert Kean, father of later Governor Thomas Kean, and King George III had first granted it to the Kean family.
  • Greenwood Gardens opens in 2011Greenwood Gardens, a historic estate garden, welcomed the public for the first time in 2011. It covers 28 acres, and the Garden Conservancy counts it among the sixteen garden preservation projects it oversees across the country.
  • A memorial of 420 ringsIn 2002 residents planted a tree at the railroad station for the neighbors they lost on September 11, 2001. In 2021, for the 20th anniversary, a public memorial by a local artist was dedicated in Crescent Park. Its 420 steel rings honor the first responders and the eight Millburn residents who were killed, and it holds two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center.
