About Maplewood, New Jersey

Maplewood is a township of 25,684 people in Essex County. English, Dutch and French Puritans began arriving around 1675, coming by way of Newark and Elizabeth along old Lenape trails. Six families, the Smiths, Browns, Piersons, Freemans, Balls and Gildersleeves, followed the path that is now Ridgewood Road and set up farms around a center they named Jefferson Village, for Thomas Jefferson. By 1815 about 30 families lived there among mills and apple orchards that grew the Harrison and Canfield varieties.

The Morris and Essex Railroad reached the area in 1838, and a land speculator named John Shedden built a station in Jefferson Village and called it Maplewood. The land was organized as South Orange Township on April 1, 1861, and from 1868 its farms were divided into house lots, turning it into a commuter suburb. South Orange village became fully independent on March 4, 1904, and on November 7, 1922, the township took the Maplewood name.

  • North Farms to HiltonSettlers who came up the trail that is now Springfield Avenue founded North Farms on a hill near where Tuscan and Springfield Avenues meet. As a stagecoach stop between Newark, Paulus Hook and Morristown, it grew into a center of trade and light manufacturing. It was renamed Middleville in 1830, then Hilton in 1880, when it got a post office.
  • Seth Boyden retires hereThe inventor Seth Boyden moved to Middleville in 1855 to retire, but he kept working, developing new farm products, berries above all. He also built the first steam engines to run on the railroad through Maplewood.
  • The Father of MaplewoodEdward Balch, a homebuilder who pictured Maplewood as a suburb, began building here around 1900. He put up 176 homes in the township, and The New York Times called him the "Father of Maplewood."
  • An Olmsted park downtownMemorial Park covers 25 acres beside the railway station. It was laid out in the 1920s, with the Olmsted Brothers and the firm of Brinley and Holbrook sharing the design work. Across the center of town, the firm of Guilbert & Betelle designed the Maplewood Municipal Building and most of the schools.
  • Ultimate and the wooden teeWilliam Lowell invented the wooden golf tee at the Maplewood Golf Club in 1921. In 1968, students at Columbia High School invented Ultimate Frisbee, now called simply Ultimate, and a plaque in the school's student parking lot marks where the game was born.
