About Fairfield, California

Fairfield is a city of 119,881 people and the county seat of Solano County, just north of Suisun Bay. The Suisun people lived on this land long before Robert H. Waterman, a clipper ship captain, laid out the town in 1856. He named it after Fairfield, Connecticut, the hometown he had left behind.

Two years later, in 1858, Waterman entered his young town in the contest to become the county seat. To win votes, he offered 16 acres of land for county buildings, and Fairfield took the seat away from Benicia. The town grew around its courthouse and was incorporated as a city in 1903.

  • The Dunker House, 1900The Dunker House went up in 1900 in Bridgeport, the settlement now known as Cordelia. It carries the name of Henry Dunker, a carpenter who came from Germany and was one of the area's early settlers.

  • Budweiser from 1976 to 2026Anheuser-Busch opened a large regional brewery in Fairfield in 1976 and brewed Budweiser there for half a century, until 2026.
  • A railroad turned parkThe Sacramento Northern Railway once ran through town. A 6 mile stretch of its old right of way became the Fairfield Linear Park, with a bicycle trail and plazas along the route.
