About Fallbrook, California
Fallbrook is a community of 32,267 people in northern San Diego County, just east of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The Payomkawichum people, whom Spanish missionaries later called Luiseños, lived here first and built large villages among the oak groves. One of those sites is now Live Oak County Park. In 1846 Governor Pío Pico gave Ysidro Alvarado the Rancho Monserate, a grant of 13,323 acres reaching from the San Luis Rey River near Bonsall north to Stagecoach Lane.
In 1869 Vital Reche, a settler born in Canada, brought his family to a homestead just north of Alvarado's ranch, on the ground where Live Oak Park is today. The Reches had lived on a Pennsylvania homestead called Fall Brook, and they gave the same name to their new home. Fallbrook has never become a city. Voters turned down incorporation in 1981 and again in 1987, so county government and elected local districts still run its services.
“Fallbrook is almost an ideal poultry location, and several good poultry ranches are in its limits. The fact that this little community of about 400 souls registers 100 automobiles is evidence that it is a comfortably well-to-do district.”
- Frank Capra's olive oilIn 1939 the film director Frank Capra bought the 536-acre Red Mountain Ranch. His father-in-law, Myron "Pop" Warner, had looked the place over while Capra was making Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Capra brought its run-down 105-acre olive grove back to life, got the ranch's press working again and sold the oil by mail under his own name as Fallbrook Olive Oil.
- A fight over river waterThe Fallbrook Public Utility District, formed in 1922, went to court against the federal government over rights to the Santa Margarita River. Capra made a short film, The Fallbrook Story, for the Chamber of Commerce in 1952 to back the district's case. He then sat on the district's board from December 1953 to June 1955, and the district is still a party to the water litigation.
- Avocado Capital of the WorldMild winters with little frost, soil that drains well and rain that falls mostly from November to April suit subtropical crops here. Avocado groves spread across the hills, and Fallbrook now calls itself the Avocado Capital of the World. It celebrates with an Avocado Festival on Main Avenue every year.
- The Rice Canyon Fire of 2007Wildfires broke out across San Diego County on October 21, 2007. Two days later the Rice Canyon Fire jumped Interstate 15 and burned into eastern Fallbrook along Reche Road, and every resident was ordered to leave. By October 23 the fire had destroyed 206 homes, two commercial properties and 40 outbuildings. More than 100 of those homes stood in the Valley Oaks Mobile Home Park and the Pala Mesa Village condominiums.
