About Falling Waters, West Virginia

Falling Waters is a community of 1,440 people in Berkeley County, on the Potomac River north of Martinsburg. It was established in 1815 on the route between Martinsburg and Hagerstown that is now Williamsport Pike, U.S. 11. Today it is mostly homes, and many residents drive to jobs in nearby cities, some reaching Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

  • A church about 1730Presbyterians were among the first to organize churches in what became Berkeley County. One of their three early churches stood at Falling Waters by about 1730, long before the community itself was established in 1815.
  • A railroad claim from 1814In 1887 the magazine Scientific American printed an article claiming that the first railroad in the United States had been built at Falling Waters in 1814.
  • Two Civil War battlesFalling Waters saw fighting twice in the Civil War, first at the Battle of Hoke's Run in July 1861. In July 1863, as the Confederates retreated from Gettysburg, the Battle of Williamsport was fought just across the river in Maryland. Custer's Union cavalry mortally wounded Gen. J. Johnston Pettigrew, a leader of Pickett's Charge, but his men held off the Union troops while most of the Army of Northern Virginia crossed the Potomac and escaped.
