About Federal Hill, Rhode Island

Federal Hill got its name from an ox roast on July 4, 1788. The party was meant to honor the new Federal Constitution. Many Rhode Islanders opposed it, and General William West marched 1,000 armed farmers into Providence. Both sides agreed to celebrate Independence Day alone. Rhode Island joined the union two years later, the last of the thirteen.

Federal Hill is the traditional heart of Italian-American life in Providence. Each year the city's Columbus Day parade marches down Atwells Avenue. Along that street, the center line shows the green, white and red of the Italian flag instead of double yellow stripes.
