About Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and the seat of Providence County, a city of 190,934 people at the head of Narragansett Bay. Roger Williams, a Massachusetts Bay Colony minister, was banished for urging that church and state stay separate and for objecting to the seizure of Native land. In 1636 he and his followers traveled down the Seekonk River and up the Providence River to the spot where two smaller rivers join, and he named it for the Providence of God that he believed had guided them there.
The settlers had no royal charter, so they governed themselves, and in 1638 they divided the east bank of the river into home lots of roughly six acres apiece. Brown University moved here from Warren in 1770, a sign that power in the colony was shifting away from Newport. After the war for independence, Providence had 7,614 people and ranked as the ninth-largest city in the nation.
- The Gaspee burned in 1772In 1772 a group of men from Providence set fire to the Gaspee, a British customs schooner, south of the town. Wikipedia counts the Gaspee Affair as the first armed blow against British rule in North America, more than a year before the Boston Tea Party. Rhode Island then broke with the British Crown on May 4, 1776, ahead of every other colony.
- Butler's Folly, 1828Cyrus Butler built the Arcade between Westminster and Weybosset streets in 1828, fronting it with six huge Ionic columns cut in Johnston and dragged to the site by oxen. Shoppers stayed away at first, so people mocked it as "Butler's Folly." Many count it as the country's first indoor shopping mall. Named a National Historic Landmark in 1976, it reopened in 2013 with shops and small apartments.
- A farm left to the cityCanonicus, a Narragansett sachem, granted Williams land in 1638, and the Williams family farm was the last piece of that grant still in his family. In her will of 1872, Betsey Williams, the last heir, gave the farm to the people of Providence. Horace Cleveland designed the 427-acre Roger Williams Park in 1878, and her 1773 farmhouse still stands there beside the family burial ground.
- Federal Hill's ox roastFederal Hill, west of Downtown, takes its name from an ox roast held on the Fourth of July in 1788 on the plain beside the hill. Italian families began settling there in the 1870s, and it grew into the center of the city's Italian American community. A pine cone called La Pigna, an Italian sign of welcome, hangs from the arch over Atwells Avenue.
- City Hall since 1878Providence adopted a city charter in 1831, when its population passed 17,000. The government met in the Market House on Market Square from 1832, the busy heart of the city, but the offices soon ran out of room, and in 1845 the City Council resolved to build a permanent home. The offices finally moved to Providence City Hall in 1878.
