About North Providence, Rhode Island

North Providence is a town of 34,114 people in Providence County, with Providence on its southern edge and Lincoln and Smithfield to the north. Settlers moved onto this land soon after Roger Williams arrived in 1636, and the town was incorporated in 1765. Its first boundaries took in pieces of what are now Providence and Pawtucket.

In 1793 Samuel Slater founded Slater Mill on the Blackstone River, in the eastern part of the town, and it became the country's first fully mechanized cotton-spinning mill. In 1874 that eastern section, mill and all, became part of Pawtucket, and North Providence lost a large share of its people. Today the town covers 5.8 square miles, which makes it the smallest town in the smallest state, since Central Falls is smaller but is a city.

  • A stone-ender from 1705The early colonists here built stone-ender houses, named for the great stone chimney wall at one end. One of them, the Joseph Smith House, went up in 1705 and still stands at 109 Smithfield Road. It is now on the National Register.
  • Captain Stephen OlneyStephen Olney, born here in 1755, served with the Continental Army through the whole Revolution, from the siege of Boston to Yorktown. At Yorktown he led the American sappers over Redoubt 10 and took serious bayonet wounds. He lived, came home and spent twenty years representing North Providence in the legislature. Captain Stephen Olney Memorial Park carries his name.
  • A mill built against fireIn 1822 John Holden Greene built the first Allendale Mill buildings for Zachariah Allen on the Woonasquatucket in Centerdale. Allen guarded his cotton mill with heavy fire doors, sprinklers, a rotary fire pump, copper-riveted hose, a thick wall around the picker room and roof shingles bedded in mortar. The company store from that year still stands beside it. Additions came in 1880, 1910 and 1947, and the mill joined the National Register in 1973.
  • Greystone, built 1904 to 1912Between 1904 and 1912 Joseph Benn and Company built the brick Greystone Mill upriver, designed by Frank Sheldon and Son, with a dam across the Woonasquatucket. The company also put up duplexes and tenements for its workers, and the Greystone Primitive Methodist Church on Oakleigh Avenue became the village's best-known building. Four houses in Greystone are older than the mill, dating back to 1822.
  • First mayor in 1974For two centuries a town council, a town clerk and a town treasurer ran North Providence. In 1974 voters chose their first mayor, Salvatore Mancini, and he held the office for 20 years.
