About Florence-Graham, California
Florence-Graham, also called Florence-Firestone, is a census-designated place of 61,983 people in the south central part of Los Angeles County. Its 3.5 square miles take in three communities, Florence, Firestone Park and Graham, and its neighbors include Watts, Compton, Lynwood and Vernon.
The area's two county libraries both began more than a century ago. The Florence Library opened in 1914 in the home of Fred W. Cleland, and the Graham Library followed in April 1915, when it started out in a brick building at Graham Elementary School.
- The Florence Library's many homesOn June 30, 1915, the Florence Library left Cleland's house for Florence Avenue Elementary School. It moved into a building with a converted stable in 1920, moved again in 1924, and settled in a storefront in 1931-1932. That storefront was refurbished in 1964 to mark the library's 50th anniversary and again in work that ended in 2002. The old library came down in 2019, and a new one opened at Compton and Nadeau in 2023.
- Graham Library since 1969Two years after it opened at the school, the Graham Library moved into a store building, then moved again in 1928 and 1938. Its present building went up in 1969. Work on it began in May 2000, and it reopened in November 2001, with a rededication on the 8th of that month. Inside are murals by the Bolivian artist Mario Cespedes.
- A Depression-era parkFranklin D. Roosevelt Park is among the oldest of the county's parks. President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized its construction as one of the Works Progress Administration's projects during the Great Depression.
- Named for Ted Watkins in 1995The 27-acre Ted Watkins Memorial Park is one of the many contributions of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee. In 1995 the park was named for Ted Watkins, who founded that committee.
- A newspaperman's parkColonel Leon H. Washington Park covers 13.2 acres on ground that was once a lumber yard. It honors Colonel Leon H. Washington, who founded The Eastside Shopper, the paper now known as The Sentinel.
