About Maywood, California

Maywood is a city of 25,138 people in Los Angeles County. At 1.18 square miles, it is the county's third-smallest city by area. Native American tribes lived on this land for centuries. In 1781 the Spanish crown granted it to Manuel Nieto, a veteran of Spain's wars. The ground later served as a cow pasture that became part of a rancho.

In 1919 a real estate company began dividing 2,300 acres of ranch land into home tracts. May Wood, a well-liked young woman on its staff, let the company use her name. Early in 1924 opponents fought hard to dissolve the planned city, but the effort failed, and Maywood was incorporated that year.

“We don't want to file for bankruptcy. We don't want to disappear as a city.”
Councilman Felipe Aguirre, via Wikipedia
  • Jeeps from Randolph StreetWillys-Overland opened its $1.5 million California factory at 6201 Randolph Street in 1929, and it employed over 900 people. Car building stopped in November 1941, and Lockheed rented the plant during World War II to make Hudson bomber parts. Willys converted it back after the war, assembling 108 civilian Jeeps by the end of November 1947. The plant built CJ-3As for that model's whole run, added Aero cars in 1952 and closed in 1954.
  • Chrysler and Ford on EasternChrysler ran its "Los Angeles" assembly plant at 5800 Eastern Avenue, at Slauson, from the 1920s until July 1971. Commerce took in that corner when it became a city in 1961. Across the street, Ford's Maywood Assembly built only Lincolns and Mercurys from 1948 to 1957. Ford then tore it down and moved the work to a new plant in Pico Rivera in 1958.
  • A city run by contractIn August 2009 Maywood's insurer said it would drop the city on July 1, 2010, citing lawsuits and its police department's record. No other insurer would cover Maywood, so the city disbanded its police, laid off nearly every employee and became the first California city to contract out all its services. Bell ran daily operations and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department handled policing. Bell ended the deal in September 2010, but Maywood stayed a city.
  • A Memorial Day street fairEach Memorial Day weekend, the city holds its Street Fair along Slauson, stretching from Pine Avenue to Loma Vista Avenue. Neighbors come for food, music, games, raffles and rides.
