About Bell Gardens, California

Bell Gardens is a city of 39,501 people in Los Angeles County, about 10 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. The Tongva village of Chokishgna once stood in this area, and it fell under the sway of Mission San Gabriel in 1771. In 1810 Antonio MarΓa Lugo, a corporal in the Spanish army, was rewarded for his service with Rancho San Antonio, a grant of 29,514 acres. After California joined the United States, newcomers took more and more of his land. By 1865 his heirs had sold most of it, some for as little as a dollar an acre.

The city takes its name from businessman James George Bell. The word Gardens comes from the Japanese farmers who leased the rich soil and grew vegetables for market, along with rice. The area stayed farmland until the 1930s. In 1930 O.C. Beck bought property and began building cheap homes for families hit by the Depression, and people called the area Billy Goat Acres. Defense plants later brought workers, schools and new homes.

“He rode magnificent horses, sitting in his $1,500 silver trimmed saddle erect and stately, with his sword strapped to the saddle beneath his left leg”

  • The county's oldest houseIn 1795 Antonio MarΓa Lugo and his father, Francisco Salvador Lugo, began an adobe at 7000 East Gage Avenue. Antonio MarΓa completed it in 1810, the year his grant came through. The lawyer Henry Tifft Gage was given the house in 1880 as a wedding present, and he restored it. Voters chose him as governor of California in 1898. He held office from 1899 to 1903 and made the house his home until his death in 1924.
  • Saved by its neighborsThe mobile home owners who rented lots on the property had formed a cooperative, the Casa Mobile Home Park. In 1983 it bought the land and the adobe from the landlord. Upkeep cost more than they could pay, so in 1987 City Councilwoman Daina Daina set out to have the house placed on the state registry. Casa de San Antonio was named California Historical Site Number 984 in 1991, which let it qualify for maintenance grants.
  • A school since 1867Farm families in the area sent their children to the San Antonio School, built in 1867 and one of the first schools in Los Angeles County. Bell Gardens Elementary now stands on the same spot.
  • Indian Revival Church, 1956The Dust Bowl drove many Native Americans to Bell Gardens. In 1956 Arthur Stoneking, an Assemblies of God evangelist of the Winnebago tribe, started a home Bible study for them. It grew into Indian Revival Center, the largest Native American congregation in Los Angeles.
