About Forest, Virginia
Forest is a community of 11,709 people in eastern Bedford County, Virginia, and downtown Lynchburg lies about 10 miles to its northeast. The best-known place in Forest is Poplar Forest, which Thomas Jefferson used as his summer home. Today Forest is a suburb of Lynchburg, and many of its neighborhoods were carved out of old farms and woodlands.
Before the suburbs grew, the Norfolk & Western rail station was probably the main stop for Forest. A few older homes still stand on a loop behind the library, along with two churches that were close to the station. The original town center was torn down without leaving a trace, and the station itself came down in the late 2010s. Today people treat the stretch of Forest Road between the post office and the Forest Library as the middle of town.
- Jefferson's octagonal retreatIn 1806 free and enslaved craftsmen started work on Poplar Forest, an eight-sided house that Thomas Jefferson designed for himself, along with an ornamental landscape around it. Jefferson used it as his summer home. The house is now open to visitors and hosts events, and archaeologists are still studying the grounds.
- Forest Road widened in 2009In 2009 U.S. Route 221, which locals call Forest Road, became a four-lane highway, and new homes and businesses soon followed. The biggest of the new developments, Ivy Hill, grew up around the Ivy Hill Golf Course. Today the community runs along Forest Road all the way from the middle school out to the Graves Mill Shopping Center.
