About Fort Ann, New York
Fort Ann is a town of 5,812 people in Washington County, and it covers more ground than any other of the county's 17 towns. It lies on the old route between the French and English colonies, so armies built forts here again and again. The French put up a small post called The Pickets in 1689, close to the lower tip of Lake Champlain, and the Englishman Fitz John Winthrop most likely raised the Stone Fort in 1692.
In 1709 Francis Nicholson led an English expedition that built Fort Schuyler about half a mile south of today's village. He burned it when his army marched away, then came back in 1711 and built the Queen's Fort on the same ground, later renamed Fort Anne for Queen Anne of Great Britain. That fort fell into ruin, so the English rebuilt it in 1757 during the French and Indian War. In 1777 the Battle of Fort Anne was fought here as part of the Saratoga Campaign.
- Westfield until 1808Part of the land lay in the Artillery Patent of 1764, which went to 24 officers of the British army, but nobody settled here until 1775. The town was created as Westfield on March 23, 1786, and on April 6, 1808, it took the name Fort Ann in memory of the battle. No one knows why the final "e" was dropped. Pieces of the first town later became Hartford in 1793 and Putnam in 1806.
- The canal comes throughThe village of Fort Ann incorporated in 1820 as its own municipality inside the town. Three years later, in 1823, the Champlain Canal was finished, tying the area to the outside world, and its route cut across part of the old Fort Schuyler site. The Delaware and Hudson Railway later opened a depot in the village.
- Hogtown and ComstockFarmers in the western part of town let their hogs roam and feed on their own, and that habit gave the area its early name, Hogtown. In the east, Peter Comstock founded the hamlet of Comstock as a shipping center. Today the hamlet is home to Great Meadow Correctional Facility and Washington Correctional Facility, both of them prisons run by the state.
- Between two great lakesThe town stretches from the shore of Lake George, where the hamlets of Pilot Knob and Shelving Rock sit, to South Bay, the southern end of Lake Champlain, in its northeast corner. Part of it lies inside the Adirondack Park, and Buck Mountain, at 2,500 feet, is its highest peak.
