About the Town of Whitehall, New York

In 1930, the owners of Whitehall's silk mill shut it down and wrecked the machinery. Hundreds of people lost their jobs. The townspeople quickly raised money, bought the mill and new equipment, and formed Champlain Spinners. By 1940 the new company was still running with success.

Whitehall was first called Skenesborough, after British officer Philip Skene. American forces seized it in May 1775. Here Benedict Arnold built a fleet to fight the British at Valcour Island. In 1960, New York declared the town the birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
